The Truth About Coolsculpting

Lately, companies have branded and popularized various minimally-invasive fat loss methods like freezing, heating or injection. One such company is Coolsculpting which touts the ability to “freeze” unwanted fat away without surgery. But, unfortunately, “too good to be true” procedures like Coolsculpting are just gimmicks that provide sub-optimal results. Don’t waste your time and hard-earned money on non-effective procedures, only to end up, inevitably, considering the GOLD STANDARD of unwanted fat reduction and body contouring, traditional liposuction. Why is this? Let me explain.

Understanding Superficial versus Deep Fat Layers

Body fat is located in two layers, a superficial layer and a deep layer. The superficial layer contains 20-30% of fat; the deep layer contains 60-70%. The superficial fat layer is beneficial and should NEVER be removed. This is because it provides a thin and uniform sheet layer for maintaining a smooth contour to the skin. In contrast, removal of the deeper fat layer is ideal and will not adversely affect contour. For it to be done correctly, though, it needs to be removed in its entirety. I will explain this further, but first, let’s discuss trendy methods like CoolSculpting which utilizes probes to “freeze” fat cells. The problem with this is that it results in killing of the fat that is closest to the freezing probe. The freezing of your superficial (good) layer of fat is unavoidable and can lead to less-than-ideal results like dimpling, divots, and contour irregularities.

In my practice, I have met (and treated) many disgruntled liposuction patients who’ve had their procedure done at a non-credited facility using only local anesthetic. Now, these patients have at least, had the correct deeper layer of fat removed; however, the patient inevitably begs the doctor to stop liposuctioning as the doctor removes the last 20% of the fat, usually compromising their results.  This happens because the last bit of fat tends to be close to the muscle where the pain fibers reside; as the surgeon gets closer to completing all of the fat removals, patients become less tolerant due to increased tenderness.

The REAL Solution: HD Liposuction vs Coolsculpting

Remember, to get optimum results, you do not want to touch the superficial fat layer, and you need to completely deplete the deeper layer. For this, the patient must be provided with proper pain management and comfort. This is why we take extreme care to minimize the stress and discomfort of surgery through our Perfect Change Program.

The truth about unwanted fat removal is that, for the best and longest-lasting result, you must choose VASER High Definition Liposuction, which involves the complete and meticulous removal of your deep fat and variable removal of the superficial fat based on the desired effect. This is a major limitation of Coolsculpting. The procedure can only be done while you are under anesthesia. This is because the last 20% of fat removed requires scraping it off of the muscle layer. This process would be too uncomfortable for you if awake. Only a highly-trained and skilled surgeon who utilizes the proper tools can perform high definition liposuction. Using an array of cannula sizes (from 3mm to 9mm) allows Dr. Mowlavi to remove all of the deep layers and differentially contour the superficial layer of fat, resulting in beautiful, six-pack results.
