Vaser Liposuction vs. SmartLipo
What is SmartLipo?
SmartLipo is a form of laser liposuction that works by liquefying fat with laser technology. The laser destroys fat cell walls, thereby freeing the liquid fat while simultaneously smoothing and tightening the skin and reducing swelling, bleeding, and bruising. Because of its skin tightening effects, many liposuction surgeons use Vaser liposuction vs SmartLipo and sometimes even combine them.
What is Vaser Hi-Def Lipo?
Rather than lasers, Vaser “high definition” liposuction utilizes ultrasonic energy to liquefy fat cells. Ultrasound energy disrupts the outer membranes of fat cells and liquefies the fat. And because Vaser Lipo only targets fat cells, it minimizes trauma to the surrounding nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. Click here to learn more about Vaser HD Lipo.
Say NO to SmartLipo, Say Yes to Vaser
SmartLipo
Because SmartLipo utilizes laser technology to melt the fat prior to removal, it is superior to traditional lipo. Traditional liposuction only removes the deeper layers of fat.
Unfortunately, companies have commercialized SmartLipo as a procedure performed without general anesthesia. And although avoiding general anesthesia might seem like a good thing, the procedure is plagued by the inability to remove fat comprehensively. This is because, as a surgeon attempts to remove unwanted fat, their patient’s inability to tolerate pain constrains them. There’s increased tenderness associated with removing the critical fat deposits that are attached to muscles. Muscle lining contains pain fibers which limit the removal of fat when patients are kept awake since they are usually unable to tolerate this portion of the surgery.
VASER Lipo
In contrast, Vaser technology provides several advantages over SmartLipo. First, it allows for a more aggressive melting of fat. This results in more complete removal of ALL unwanted fat. In fact, it is this very comprehensive removal of both the deep and superficial layers of fat that results in the “mouth dropping” results that experts achieve through VASER Liposuction. Second, Vaser Lipo requires general anesthesia which is actually a good thing because it ensures the total comfort of the patient and allows for the removal of ALL fat surrounding the muscles, creating the highly-desired sculpted or “ripped” appearance.
Regardless of your opinion on general anesthesia, the superior results obtained by VASER Lipo over SmartLipo is undeniable. In fact, I urge you to consider whether avoidance of general anesthesia is worth a lifetime of sub-optimal results.
Other companies applied this same paradigm over the last decade involving facelifts. A company called Lifestyle Lift convinced a large share of the market to undergo facelift surgery without the need for general anesthesia. Although the surgery avoided general anesthesia, the results were less than ideal and patients living with a lifetime of sub-par results. Despite early success, the Lifestyle Lift company ultimately went bankrupt.

The idea that SmartLipo avoids general anesthesia is undeniably attractive to patients, but may not be so favorable when you consider the inferior results achieved in comparison to those obtained with Vaser Liposuction. I urge you to judge the results achieved through Vaser Lipo with a critical eye when compared to other liposuction techniques and then ask yourself, “Why would you even consider anything else?”
The decision to have VASER liposuction vs SmartLipo is highly personal. Although both SmartLipo and Vaser are good at liquefying fat, they use different means and also produce slightly different results. When you make your decision, remember that SmartLipo and Vaser are only tools. Your liposuction results will mainly depend upon the experience, skill, and artistry of your surgeon.
