Treating Coolscupting Complications

The Often Unknown CoolSculpting Complication

Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH) following Coolsculpting has been reported as a rare but significant coolsculpting complication. This side effect which leaves areas of fat that are uneven, larger and hard is likely more common than reported and may have a propensity in patients who have even slight weight gain following cryolipolisys (Coolsculpting) treatments. Patients report exaggerated fat growth in the areas treated by Coolsculpting which is disproportionate to fat growth in non-treated areas. This unfortunate side effect can result in deformities far worse than any concerns the patient had prior to surgery.

What makes PAH even more concerning is that 1) the growth is permanent despite weight loss, and 2) the deformity is not correctable with either traditional tumescent liposuction and/or repeated cryolipolysis treatments. In fact, the deformity can become worse with repeated Cryolipolysis treatment attempts! Fortunately, we can now provide definitive and permanent correction of paradoxical adipose hyperplasia deformities using two innovative technologies; VASER® technology and Cool Helium Plasma® skin tightening technology to address any coolsculpting complication.

coolsculpting-paradoxical-adipose-hyperplasia-treatmentThe VASER® liposuction technology allows for the comprehensive removal of fat from both the superficial and deep layers of fat. This is in contrast to traditional liposuction which is limited to removing only the deep layer. An additional constraint of the fat associated with paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is that it is very fibrous and difficult to remove by means of traditional liposuction. The use of VASER ultrasound technology, which helps with even fibrous fat extraction, overcomes this coolsculpting complication.

Cool Helium Plasma® skin tightening technology is the second critical component to a smooth outcome and mimimize coolsculpting complication. It allows for tightening of the skin overlying the stretched out and redundant (loose) area of PAH. With the combination of Cool Helium Plasma skin tightening technique and VASER liposuction we now can permanently eliminate deformities associated with paradoxical adipose hyperplasia.
